The women's competiton started the day and Freshman Jenny Dahlgren from Georgia led the first flight of the prelims. Dahlgren opened up with a near personal best throw of 65.12m and decided to pass on her next throws. Suprising was the fact that number eight seed Dayana Octavien and number ten seed Britney Henry both fouled out in this first flight making it hard to determine who might qualify for Saturday's final. The second flight was all Candice Scott. Scott opened up with a throw of 65.68m that easily qualified her for the finals. Loree Smith was also able to get off a good throw of 63.81m in the third round. Freshmen Sultana Frizell of Georgia and Julia Rozenfeld of USC both threw personal bests to qualify for finals. Amber Campbell suprised many by also fouling out of the competition. Just two weeks earlier Campbell beat Scott at the East Regional and came into nationals seeded second.

Later in the day Keith McBride highlighted the men's competition. McBride opened up with two near personal best throws and then hit a two meter personal best on his last throw to finish in the second qualifying position. Defending champion Lucais MacKay of Georgia was the top qualifier at 67.43m, less than a foot ahead of McBride. Also with a stellar performance was Adam Hamilton of Iowa who threw a personal best to finish as the seventh best qualifier.
