Kristen Callan (Monroe-Woodbury, Cent Valley, NY) and Nick Owens (Shelton, WA) barely won their events at this year's Nike Indoor Championships. Martin Bingisser The entry lists have been announced and this year's Nike Indoor Championships looks to be one of the best in recent years. Nick Owens (Shelton, WA) is the top boy signed up while the top eight women in the nation will be attending the competition. Tarro and Callan win Weightarama 2003 Kristen Callan (Monroe-Woodbury, Cent Valley, NY) and Jimmy Tarro (Coventry, RI) were victorious at this year's edition of Weightarama. Callan dominated her event by beating out second-place thrower Kelly Reynolds (Toll Gate, Warwick, RI) by more than four feet. Next weekend, athletes from across the nation will be headed to the indoor national championships. It will be the first opportunity for many northeast throwers to face the nation's other top throwers. » Click here for the Weightarama 2003 Results The National Championships near closer With only one weekend left before the National Championship meets, many east coast throwers will be preparing at this weekend's Weightarama 2003. Bob Gourley's popular meet is usually home to many personal bests and a fun time by all. Results be be posted soon after completion of the meet. Arrhenius breaks national class record Leif Arrhenius (Mountain View, Orem, UT) broke the national Junior Class record this weekend at the Western States Open meet in Salt Lake City with a throw of 76'01.75". His throw broke the record previously set by Rhode Island's Josh McCaughey in 1999 at 73'06.00". Leif's throw is also the fourth best all-time. Also this weekend, Kristen Callan won her New York State qualier meet with a throw of 54'04.75". » Click here for the New York State Qualifier Results RI State meet concludes; Clark reclaims top spot Zak Thomas (South Kingstown, Wakefield, RI) and Kelly Reynolds (Toll Gate, Warwick, RI) won the Rhode Island Indoor State Championship this weekend in Kingston, RI. The meet on Sunday was host to a few person bests and some exciting competition. Now, athletes are starting to prepare for the indoor national championships. » Click here for Rhode Island Indoor Championships Results Owens and Clark victorious in Idaho After setting a new PR last week, Nick Owens (Shelton, WA) won the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho on Thursday. He threw 74'06.50" to beat Leif Arrhenius (Mountain View, Orem, UT) by more than two feet. Georgians Della Clark (North Cobb, Marietta, GA) and Marie Stringer (Westminster, Atlanta, GA) took first and second on the girl's side. Clark's winning mark was 53'04.50". The girl's competition was also host to a new national Freshman class record. Sarah Cardinal (Blackfoot Track Club, ID) threw 42'06.50") to break the old record of 40'00.50" set by Meaghan Joyce last season. » Click here for Simplot Games Results Thomas throws huge in Division Championships; Owens hits 80' At the Boy's Division Championships this weekend Senior Zak Thomas (South Kingstown, Wakefield, RI) threw an impressive personal best of five feet. His new mark of 74'08.75" also ranks him #9 on the all-time list. Kelly Reynolds (Toll Gate, Warwick, RI) produced the top girl's mark witha throw of 52'08.00". Nick Owens (Shelton, WA) threw 80'06.00" at a meet in Washington to improve his nation-leading mark. He throw of 56'02.00" also broke her own state record. Jake Dunkleberger (Lovett, Atlanta, GA) no longer has his wrist in a splint and improved to 69'09.50". Jake Dunkleberger (Lovett, Atlanta, GA) also debuted at 62'00.25" to rank sixth in the nation. Outside of Georgia Kelly Reynolds (Toll Gate, Warwick, RI) improved her mark, and Derek Andreisian (Sandy, OR) opened up his season at 60'09.50". » Click here for the 1/20 Boy's Rankings Many improvements over the weekend With many meets happening this weekend, there were plenty of improvements on this week's rankings. In addition to the major improvements made at the Dartmouth Relays (see next item below), Leif Arrhenius debuted at the Utah State University Invitational. His throw of 70'05.00" puts him second in the nation. Zak Thomas (South Kingstown, Wakefield, RI) won the boys competition with a throw of 69'07.00". His mark was more than four feet better than second place thrower Dan Godin's (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) throw of 65'02.00". Kelly Reynolds (Toll Gate, Warwick, RI) won the Coaches Invitational with a throw of 49'05.25". » Click here for Coaches Invitational (RI) Results Zak Thomas shows dominance in Rhode Island South Kingstown (Wakefield, RI) senior Zak Thomas turned in an impressive performance Thursday night at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) High School Invitational. His throw of 66'03.75" won the competition by nearly nine feet. At another preseason meet in Washington, Nick Owens (Shelton, WA) had an impressive day throwing 77'07.00" in the 25# weight throw and 63'00.25" in the 35# weight. Both of those marks rank him number two all-time. » Click here for STC Turkey Toss Results 2003 Indoor Weight Throw Preview Nick Owens and Kelly Reynolds lead this year's returners. However, many more throwers have a shot at becoming this year's national champion. New names will also be seen near the top this season since seven out of the top ten boys, and eight out of the top ten girls from last season have graduated. While this year may not produce the depth of last season, it is sure to produce great marks. Owens shatters state weight throw record At a preseason meet on Halloween in Washington, both Nick Owens and Kyle Cofield turned in great performances. Nick Owens set a personal best of nearly four feet as he reset his state record to 74'02.00". Cofield turned in another great performance with his throw of 68'00.50".
