Freeman and Cooper PR to win NIN
John Freeman (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) tossed a personal best this weekend to take home the Nike Indoor Nationals title. He best throw landed more than three feet over his personal best at 72'06.75". Alex Pessala (Chaminade, Mineola, NY) also threw an impresive best to place second. Matt Maloney (LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI) entered the meet the the best mark and also broke 70' to place third. Tara Cooper (Logan Elm, Circleville, OH) was just as impressive in winning the women's title. Cooper threw a personal best last weekend only to be overshadowed by Kim Williams' (Alexander, Douglasville, GA) big personal best. This weekend was all Cooper as she threw a new best of almost three feet. Cooper led the competition from the second round and improved by three feet in the final round to get to 56'02.00". Megan Maloney (LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI) was second at 52'06.00".
Also this weekend was the National Scholastic Indoor Championships held in New York City. Walter Henning (St. Anthony's, South Huntington, NY) was able to leave victorious in a close competition. He won by a little more than a foot over Brendan Lodge (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) and Alex Pessala (Chaminade, Mineola, NY) , who were within one inch of each other. Kim Williams (Alexander, Douglasville, GA) won an even closer women's competition. She had the same distance of Emily Bernhardt (Lassiter, Marietta, GA), but won because she had a better second throw. Megan Maloney (LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI) was less than a foot behind in third place.

Williams, Cooper improve
This weekend was a great weekend for the women's weight throw. Going into the weekend, Tara Cooper (Logan Elm, Circleville, OH) and Emily Sanders (Sequoyah, Canton, GA) were tied for the national lead. However, at the Akron Blue and Gold High School Meet in Ohio, Cooper slightly improved her personal best. But, that was not enough to end the weekend atop the national performance list. On Sunday, Kim Williams (Alexander, Douglasville, GA) also improved her best by several feet to 56'01.75". That mark puts her atop the list with a more than two foot lead over the next thrower.
Also this weekend, the annual Weightarama took place in Rhode Island. Walter Henning won the boy's weight throw, while Megan Maloney (Barrington, RI) took the girl's competition. Zack Midles (Capital, Olympia, WA) also tied his personal best from last season by throwing 218'07" at an early season meet in Washington.

Henning re-sets record
At last weekend's Farmingdale High School Invitational, Walter Henning re-set his own national sophomore class record in the weight throw. His best throw came on his third attempt and measured 75'00.50" Three of his four legal throws were over 71 feet and his other throw still measured over 69 feet. That mark also moves Henning ahead of Matt Maloney on the national performance list leading into the last few weeks of the season. Henning broke Manny Silverio's long standing national class record in January.

New throwers top performance lists
Walter Henning (St. Anthony's, South Huntington, NY) threw a new sophomore class record this weekend and moved to the top of the boy's performance list with a comfortable three foot lead this past weekend. His mark of 70'07.50" was one of three throws he had over 67 feet and was confirmed Sunday as an official national class record. While good marks have been coming out of Ohio all year, the girl's made a big splash this weekend by throwing some big bests. Now the Ohio girls have two throwers over 50 feet and three of the top seven girls in the nation. Tara Cooper (Logan Elm, Circleville, OH) threw a personal best of 53'03.50" to win the Rubber City Open in Akron, Ohio. That mark moves her atop the girl's list.

Henning throws unofficial class record
In early results from this weekend Walter Henning (St. Anthony's, South Huntington, NY) threw an impressive mark of 70'07.50" at a meet at Farmdale High School in New York on Saturday. The mark surpass Manny Silverio's national sophomore class record of 69'01.00" set back in 1974. That record is the oldest weight throw record still around. The mark still needs to be confirmed, but if it meets the criteria for a new record it will become the third class record set this season.
Hunter leads strong group of Georgia throwers; two throw record
Coach Mike Judge has produced one of his best groups of throwers this season. Zack Hunter (Marietta, GA) leads the way with the national lead on the boy's side. His throw of 67'02.75" put him more than a foot ahead of his teammate Andrew Hackney (Brookwood, Snellville, GA). Emily Sanders (Sequoyah, Canton, GA) also leads the girl's side. Overall Georgia has the top three boy's marks and three of the top four girl's marks.
Perhaps the biggest news coming from the group is that out the outstanding your throwers. This previous weekend saw two national freshman records fall at the Clemson Throws Fest. Wes Wright (Marietta, GA) officially broke the record and still has another mark more than a foot past the record that does not meet the criteria for certification as a record. Allison Horner also broke the girl's record although Arianna Lugo has a mark that also does not meet the criteria.

Young throwers step into spotlight
This season has seen the rise of several young throwers. Although the season is only halfway done several underclassman have already made their mark. Three sophomore men are over the 64' mark. Freshman Wes Wright (Villa Rica, GA) has set a new unofficial national class record and two other freshman are within two feet of the old official mark. On the girls's side both Adrianna Lugo (Alta Loma, Havienda Heights, CA) and Allison Horner (Locett, Marietta, GA) have already set new unofficial national freshman class records.
However, that is not all. The middle school kids have entered the action this year with several athletes on the national performance lists. On the girl's side both 8th grader Lauren Chambers of Georgia and 7th grader Casey Kraychir of California have thrown marks that surpass the nationa freshman record. Another 7th grader, Patrice Gates of Georiga, is within a few inches of that record. Katie Kraychir, younger sister of Casey, has become the first 6th grader (to my knowledge) to appear on the list with a throw of over 35'.

Henning PRs, Georgia continues to produce top results
Sophomore Walter Henning (St. Anthony's, South Huntington, NY) is coming off a season where he set the national freshman hammer record and also set an unoffical national freshman weight record. In his second meet he does not disappoint by throwing a huge personal best and moving within 6" of the national leader Andrew Hackney (Brookwood, Snellville, GA). Also improving on the boy's list was Charles Rohling who improved to 62'11.25".
There was also plenty of movement on the girl's list. Kim Williams (Alexander, Douglasville, GA) moved to the top of the list with a throw of 50'09.50". A slew of girls also improved over 40' causing a lot of movement in the top 20.

2005 Indoor Season Underway, Wright opens with unofficial national freshman record
The new year is approaching, but the meets have already started with tons of great early marks. Bob Gourley has released this season's first performance list including results from Rhode Island's first big invitational, the Coaches Invitational for girls. In pre-season action Wes Wright (Marietta, GA) threw a new personal best of 60'08.75". That mark exceeds the existing national freshman class record, but the competition at which the mark was thrown does not meet the requirements for a national record. Wright must throw the mark at one of the season's major invitationals in order to officially break the national record.
