USATF Youth Championships (NC)

Junior Conor McCullough (Chaminade, West Hills, CA) set a new national high school 12# hammer throw record with a throw of 79.24m (260’00”) at the 2008 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. That throw broke the national high school record of 255’11” set by Walter Henning (St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, NY) last season. The throw also broke Henning’s national junior class record of 76.96m (252’06”) set in 2006. Last week, McCullough qualified for the US World Junior Championship team, which will take place on July 10th in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Another notable performance at the Youth Championships was Brad Bolton's (El Toro, Lake Forest, CA) Intermediate divsion win. Bolton, only a freshman, improved his personal best to 193'07".

Nike Outdoor Nationals (NC)

Mike Gama (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) came from behind to win the boy's competition at this year's Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC. Gama sat in third place entering the finals. However on his fifth throw he improved to 204'01", a mark good enough to win the competition. Wes Wright (Villa Rica, GA) took second place.

National leader Allison Horner (Kell, Marietta, GA) easily won the women's competition, leading from start to finish. Her best attempt came on her final throw and measured 177'02". Victoria Flowers (Classical, Providence, RI) took second place at 167'10". Meaghan McGovern (North Kingstown, RI) was in a distant third.
